Hill Street Community Garden

Chelsea Flower Show Comes to Wexford!
Hill Street Community Garden Party

From marigolds to antirrhinums, lavenders to pansies, beetroots to parsnips, squash to beans, lots of herbs and much much more.  All were on display in Hill Street Community Garden last Friday, 21st July 2017 when Wexford Chamber hosted a ‘Garden Party’ to thank and to celebrate the achievements of various community groups who have developed the garden over the past few months.  Special thanks must go to groups from Windmill Theraputic Centre Wexford, FDYS, Ard Aoibhinn Wexford and Wexford Working Men’s Club who have tirelessly worked planting, weeding and watering a variety of plants that were donated by Wexford County Council, by Niall Reck of Graphedia and by some anonymous donors.  Local resident, Senan O’Reilly is on site daily and his assistance is very much appreciated.

The Community Garden has become a beautiful  space leading through the Hill Street Car Park into Redmond Park. The sun was shining and everybody enjoyed the occasion.  Madeleine Quirke, CEO of Wexford Chamber thanked everybody who participated in this wonderful project.  “We have had help from so many people and no matter how big or small the donation, collectively this is a real success story” said Madeleine.  “Wexford County Council has been very generous in its support of the project and Carragh Landscape & Paving provided tons of top soil for the project.  Other groups have come along from time to time and we would encourage all community groups to continue to be involved and help  further develop this garden.  We plan to plant fruit trees, build a bug hotel, construct a compost bin and learn how to compost, propagate our own seeds and keep the garden full of colour all year round.”

Cliona Connolly, Environmental Community Officer with Wexford County Council was on hand to give advice to all the gardeners.  She was delighted with progress and commented on what is an amazing transformation from what was effectively waste ground only a few months ago.  “The result of your hard work is evident for all to enjoy and you should be very proud of your achievements”  said Cliona. “Wexford County Council is delighted to be involved and will continue to support this project and assist with training and advising on what to plant and when to plant it” added Cliona.

Madeleine had a special word of thanks for Matty O’Gorman who has been overseeing the project from the beginning.  “What he doesn’t know about plants is not worth knowing!!  He is so generous with his time and keeps an eye on everything for us.”

Coupled with a visit to Redmond Park, a walk through the Hill Street Community Garden is something you will enjoy.
